Sameep Karve hunts for "N"
Today on Saturday morning had a heavy breakfast at my Company's guest house and got ready to go at office. Mumbai is flooded with rains and city is getting continuous showers. In normal course I go to office via Dadar but today due to rains and to avoid traffic jams I chose to head from Matunga Central via Five Gardens. Whenever I am in Matunga I make it a point to hunt at some or the other South Indian restaurants. But today as already I was full thought to give a sweet treat to my taste buds. I had heard that there is some sweet dish starting with letter "N" which is available at Ram Ashray so just checked on google for the sweets starting with "N" and got a list of such sweets. Just going through that list my foodie instincts signaled me that the sweet which I am searching is called Neyyappam. I was not aware how it tastes as it was for the first time I was trying so just asked the waiter to gave its description and ingredients used in it. When waiter narrated that it is basically made from rice flour and jaggery and shallow fried in ghee I quickly placed my order to try it.

Neyappam is a homey dessert, a compact, prim, doughnut without a hole,
made with rice flour, jaggery, Cardamom, grated coconut and ghee, in a
special pan with precise pockets, like the moon's face, one for each
Neyappam. Getting good Neyyappam in Kerala itself can be tricky. So, to
be able to savour the same in Mumbai is mostly out of the question.
Tucking into this globular pancake, that is hot and soft, makes for a
perfect indulgence. These babies are tiny ones but surely a must try out
and Ram Ashray has mastered in its culinary preparations. This sweet is
one of the temple offerings to Lord Krishna in Kerala.
Another hit sweet dish at Ram Ashray is the Pineapple Shira which they serve. I also ordered the one for taste and it was yummy. It was adequately sweet and soft with small pineapple pieces adding on to the zest. Something that you cannot miss when you're eating at Ram Ashray.
Highly recommended.
